Editing, Leadership, and Teambuilding

Survey Collection

In one of my new tasks as coverage editor, I worked with my co-editor Lila Goldin to write and administer online surveys to gather data for the print newsmagazines. However, we wanted to gather data on more sensitive topics such as drugs and privacy, so we also administered an anonymous print survey, which we had to input by hand into a spreadsheet. I worked diligently to input this data, as well as helping to collect results. Ultimately, I think it was a deeply flawed way to collect data, but I'm proud of us for carrying on.

Coverage Editing

The bulk of my work for The Muse thus far this year has been editing first drafts in my role as coverage editor. While many of my individual comments have been lost to time (because they were approved on their Google Doc, or they were made verbally), I'm proud to say that I had a hand in helping writers to shape their stories in Issues 1 and 2. I believe that I've been a speedy but effective editor, and throughout the draft cycle I've tried to give guidance to writers as their stories progress.

FSPA District 7 Workshops

This year on The Muse, I've made a concerted effort to attend workshops and extracurricular opportunities to improve my editorial leadership and teambuilding with my fellow staff members. One such event was held in Nov. 2024 at Nova Southeastern University, where I was able to attend workshops on investigative journalism, interview skills, and editorial leadership. Throughout the day, I worked with student journalists from my publication and beyond.

NSPA Convention 2024

I had the honor in Nov. 2024 to attend the NSPA Fall Convention in Philadelphia, PA, helping to represent The Muse as we accepted national awards. Although I attended many workshops and enjoyed meeting industry professionals, my proudest moment was probably leading my team to 2nd place in the journalism Quiz Bowl competition held at the convention (pictured). All jokes aside, though, it was a truly incredible experience and I feel like I've grown as a leader and team player because of it.
Editor-in-Chief Application

In the second semester, I (hesitantly) decided to put in the work to apply for my publication's highest position. Pictured is part of my application which I presented to my advisor and upper editors. I was actually very proud of my application and ability to come up with ideas to tackle publication-wide issues, and to my surprise it earned me the role in January.

Agendas

In one of my roles as EIC, I alternate creating class agendas with my co-editor Sienna. We pick exemplar stories every week, both from other publications and from ours, to celebrate our work and expose students to other great journalism in the world. I think it's an important act of leadership to set aside class time for these things, and we always try to balance it with fun activities.

Design Proofing

One initial leadership struggle was the EIC responsibility of helping to proof finished issues for publication. Without much design experience, I got my InDesign certification and asked for help in learning to proof - even if it took a long time, I'm proud of myself for learning how to move captions around and fix leading, and I hope next year it will translate to more design experience.

Getting Pied in the Face...

I put my life on the line for this publication. In all seriousness, though, this was one idea I had that contributed to my role, not as some bossy supervisor but as a colleague that can laugh at myself and support the staff, even if that means celebrating the winner of a web contest with a fun activity at my own expense. I think it exemplifies my commitment to the publication and to making Muse always an exciting place to be.
